Your Story Isn’t Over
There was a season of my life when I wanted out.
Not out of my marriage.
Not out of my faith.
But out of the life I was living.
Completely out.
I was exhausted. Burned out. My wife was battling cancer. Ministry had become heavier than I knew how to carry.
It felt like wave after wave kept crashing into our lives, and I wasn’t sure how much longer I could keep going.
I wasn’t looking for a new opportunity—I was looking for an escape.
I wanted to run.
I wanted to do something—anything—other than what I felt called to do.
Looking back now, I realize something important.
I wasn’t just overwhelmed by my circumstances.
I was afraid my story was over.
Not that I would stop breathing. Not that life would come to an end. But that the best part of my story was behind me. That somehow I had reached the end of what God wanted to do through my life.
Maybe my story was basically over.
It was a terrible feeling.
Maybe you’re feeling it now.
When Life Makes You Believe It’s Too Late
Over the years, I’ve met people from every walk of life who have quietly come to the same conclusion.
A business owner whose company failed.
A husband or wife whose marriage ended.
Someone who received a diagnosis they never expected.
A pastor who lost their passion.
A retiree who wondered if their most meaningful days were behind them.
A young adult who took a wrong turn and became convinced they had permanently damaged their future.
Their stories were all different.
But the conclusion was often the same:
“My story is over.”
Sometimes we reach that conclusion because of failure.
Sometimes because of disappointment.
Sometimes because of loss.
And sometimes because life simply didn’t turn out the way we expected.
We look around and think:
I had my chance.
I missed it.
I blew it.
It’s too late now.
But what feels like the end of the story is often just the end of a chapter.
And chapters can be painful.
Some chapters are filled with heartbreak.
Some with confusion.
Some with loss.
Some with questions that don’t seem to have answers.
But a difficult chapter is not the same thing as a finished story.
God Often Works in the Chapters We’d Skip
I’ve learned that God often does some of His deepest work in the chapters we would gladly skip.
The chapters we never would have chosen.
The chapters we don’t understand while we’re living them.
One of the things that sustained me during my difficult season was the realization that God’s calling on my life hadn’t disappeared simply because I was discouraged.
That truth eventually became an anchor for my soul.
Romans 11:29 says:
“For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”
God doesn’t abandon His plans for our lives because we walk through a hard season.
He doesn’t give up on us because we’re tired.
He doesn’t walk away because we’ve failed.
And He doesn’t stop loving us because we don’t have all the answers.
I’ve discovered that God is often far more committed to our future than we are.
What Felt Like an Ending Was Actually a Transition
There were moments when I was ready to quit.
Moments when I wondered if I had anything left to give.
Moments when I honestly believed the most meaningful part of my life was behind me.
But God wasn’t finished.
Looking back now, I can see that what felt like an ending was actually a transition.
And if you’re reading this today, there’s a good chance He isn’t finished with you either.
Maybe you’re carrying regret.
Maybe you’re carrying disappointment.
Maybe you’re exhausted from trying to hold everything together.
Maybe nobody even knows you feel this way.
You’ve learned how to smile when people ask how you’re doing.
You’ve learned how to keep showing up.
You’ve learned how to tell everyone that everything is fine.
But deep inside you’ve quietly wondered:
“Are my best days behind me?”
What If This Isn’t the End?
Can I gently suggest another possibility?
What if this isn’t the end of your story?
What if it’s simply a chapter you never wanted to write?
What if the pain you’re experiencing today is real, but it isn’t final?
What if God is still working even when you can’t see it?
What if there’s another chapter ahead that you haven’t imagined yet?
One of my favorite reminders comes from Philippians 1:6:
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
God finishes what He starts.
The Lie That Your Future Has Been Canceled
I believe one of the enemy’s favorite lies is convincing people that their future has been canceled.
That they missed their opportunity.
That their failure is final.
That their usefulness has expired.
I’ve felt that way.
Most likely, you have too.
But throughout Scripture we see a different story.
Abraham thought he was too old.
Moses thought he wasn’t qualified.
David experienced failure.
Peter experienced failure.
Paul experienced hardship after hardship.
Yet God continued writing their stories.
And He still does.
As Long as God Is Still Working, There Is Still Hope
If you’re reading this today and you’re convinced your story is over, let me encourage you with this simple truth:
As long as God is still at work, there is still hope. And if there is still hope, there is still a future.
Maybe you’re standing in the middle of a chapter instead of at the end of the book.
Maybe the page you’re on is painful.
Maybe it’s confusing.
Maybe it’s not the chapter you would have chosen.
In fact, that’s one of the reasons I created this website—to encourage people who are struggling to believe there is still another chapter to be written.
Take heart.
God is still working.
There is still purpose.
There is still hope.
There is still another step to take.
And there is still a God who specializes in writing beautiful endings to stories that once seemed beyond repair.
The prophet Isaiah reminds us that those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
That’s my prayer for you today.
So hold your head up.
Keep going.
Keep taking the next step forward.
Keep trusting.
Keep strengthening your courage.
Because your story isn’t over.
